Fall Out Boy vs. Panic! At The Disco

BY AGATHON FRIC

ROUND 1: THE BIG BREAK
FALL OUT BOY: Based in Chicago, Fall Out Boy was born in 2000 and by 2003 the band had released its first album Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend. Another four years and two records later and the world is still coping with the fallout!
PANIC! ATD: On the other hand, the Las Vegas-based band Panic! At The Disco got its big break when the members contacted Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy and he offered to sign them to his record label. But, of course, the group didn't release its first album until 2005.

If it weren't for Fall Out Boy, there would be no Panic! At The Disco. Pete Wentz scores for his band mates.
SCORE: FALL OUT BOY – 1
PANIC! ATD – 0

ROUND 2: SOUND BITES
FALL OUT BOY: Patrick, Joe, Pete, and Andrew are Fall Out Boy. Patrick's voice provides an original sound, but the band tends to fit within the traditional punk-pop-rock framework. Not that it's a bad thing…
PANIC! ATD: Meanwhile, Brendon, Ryan, Jon, and Spencer combine their talents to produce a unique sound that is entirely their own. Panic! At The Disco sounds like a circus from start to finish: a non-stop dance, punk, indie rock party unlike any other. In fact, you can't put a label on their style.

Panic! At The Disco doesn't just go outside the box. It tears the box apart. Panic! scores.
SCORE: FALL OUT BOY – 1
PANIC! ATD – 1

ROUND 3: SINGLE SCUFFLE
FALL OUT BOY: "Dance, Dance" is Fall Out Boy's bass-driven, biggest single to date with a catchy chorus. It's a great song, but it sounds like something any other mainstream band could have spit out.
PANIC! ATD: Panic! At The Disco's number one single is the unforgettable theatrical anthem "I Write Sins Not Tragedies". Ironically, this track will make you want to "Dance, Dance" more than Fall Out Boy's song.

Fall Out Boy's "7 Minutes In Heaven" are up. Panic! At The Disco wins Round 3.
SCORE: FALL OUT BOY – 1
PANIC! ATD – 2

ROUND 4: THE CD SELL-OUT
FALL OUT BOY: Normally, being labelled a "sell-out" isn't a good thing. In this case, it is. Fall Out Boy released their most successful album to date in 2005 called From Under the Cork Tree. It has sold over two million copies in the US alone, making it 2x platinum.
PANIC! ATD: A Fever You Can't Sweat Out is the name of Panic! At The Disco's debut album which was also released in 2005. It secured platinum status within ten months. Not bad for a rookie band, but not good enough to surpass Fall Out Boy.

Panic! At The Disco falls short. Fall Out Boy ties the match!
SCORE: FALL OUT BOY – 2
PANIC! ATD – 2

ROUND 5: BACK TO THE FUTURE
FALL OUT BOY: Fall Out Boy will add a forth album to its collection this month when Infinity On High hits stores February 6th. The record's first single "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" is already ripping through airwaves, as pressure builds for the band to outdo its last LP. Start panicking.
PANIC! ATD: The boys of Panic! At The Disco may not have sold as many albums as their opponent, but they did manage to land a major record deal AND go platinum all before the age of 20, which is more than I can say for Fall Out Boy. The band's sophomore album is slated for release later this year.

Fall Out Boy owned the past, but the future belongs to Panic! At The Disco.
SCORE: FALL OUT BOY – 2
PANIC! ATD – 3

ROUND UP: Fall Out Boy should take its own advice and "Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying" because Disco isn't dead! With a haunting, original sound and smart lyrics to boot, Panic! At The Disco gets the top punk-pop-rock salute. Having A Fever… never felt so good.
