Best Buy vs. Future Shop

BY AGATHON FRIC

ROUND 1: CANADIAN CONNECTION
BEST BUY: Founded in 1983, Best Buy is a big-box electronics retailer based in the United States. The American chain acquired Future Shop, Canada's leading name in technological gadgets, in 2001 for more than $500 million and has since opened its own stores in Canada under the Best Buy brand.
FUTURE SHOP: It may be owned and operated by a U.S. company now, but Future Shop has a Canadian connection that can't be forgotten. The first Future Shop opened in Vancouver in 1982 and the company eventually became the largest vendor of electronics in the country.

Here's to "True patriot love"! Future Shop snags the first point.
SCORE: BEST BUY – 0
FUTURE SHOP – 1

ROUND 2: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
BEST BUY: An electronics chain is only as good as it is accessible. When it comes to the abundance of Best Buys in Canada compared with the frequency of Future Shops, the Double-B doesn't size up. There are only about 51 Best Buy locations across Canada with none in three of the Atlantic provinces.
FUTURE SHOP: Meanwhile, Future Shop has over 100 stores from coast to coast, including at least one in every province. So, when they say to "Come see what the future has in store", you can actually come see what's in the store!

Best Buy will have to play catch up…Future Shop steals Round 2!
SCORE: BEST BUY – 0
FUTURE SHOP – 2

ROUND 3: ATTACK OF THE ATMOSPHERE
BEST BUY: No one likes to be pressured into buying something, and the sales associates at Best Buy tend to leave you alone unless you ask for help. That way you can shop in a relaxed, hassle-free environment without being hoodwinked into buying an extended warranty or other accessories that you don't need.
FUTURE SHOP: Conversely, the atmosphere at Future Shop is tenser. Some employees remain on a commissioned salary which means there is greater pressure on the associates to ring up as many sales as possible and, thus, greater pressure on you to spend more than you have to.

The Best Buy sales associate escapes the clutches of the fanged Future Shop employee! Best Buy makes a comeback.
SCORE: BEST BUY – 1
FUTURE SHOP – 2

ROUND 4: REWARDS RIOT
BEST BUY: Best Buy has a points program for its customers called the Best Buy Reward Zone. For every dollar you spend, you earn one point and for every 400 points you earn, you get $5 off your next purchase. It may not sound like much, but it's easy to spend $400 when you're shopping for electronics!
FUTURE SHOP: Unlike its parent company, Future Shop doesn't have any special customer incentives, which begs the question: why not?

What goes around comes around. Best Buy scores another point!
SCORE: BEST BUY – 2
FUTURE SHOP – 2

ROUND 5: CHEQUE POINT
BEST BUY: Ultimately, what matters most is which store has the better, or best, buy. Best Buy sounds like the obvious choice, but don't let the name fool you. Sure, you can get good deals on DVDs and computers, but if you shop around you'll find that Future Shop usually has equal, if not lower, prices.
FUTURE SHOP: However, be warned that while Future Shop tends to have comparable prices with its competitor, you'll pay more for certain products at Future Shop than you would for the same gadgets at Best Buy. Still, the point is that Best Buy doesn't have a monopoly on good deals.

This isn't so much a point for Future Shop as it is against Best Buy for misleading customers with its name.
SCORE: BEST BUY – 2
FUTURE SHOP – 3

ROUND UP: At Best Buy, there are "Thousands of Possibilities," but in Combat Corner, there are only two: win or lose. A positive atmosphere and rewards program make Best Buy a force to be reckoned with, but ultimately its few stores can't compete with Future Shop's hundred. So, if you like what the future has in store, then Future Shop has all you need, and more.
