Iron Man vs. Sherlock Holmes

BY AGATHON FRIC

ROUND 1: THE JOB INTERVIEW
IRON MAN: Few things on the market are hotter than Downey these days. Of course, I’m referring to Robert Downey, Jr. and not the popular brand of fabric softener. In fact, there hasn’t been anything “soft” about the actor’s smashing success as the titular characters in the recently revived IRON MAN and SHERLOCK HOLMES franchises. But which of his characters could take the other on in a battle – and win? As a brilliant engineer and the head of a global weapons firm, Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man has both the money and means to elude Holmes’ hunt.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: Working as a consulting detective may be exciting, but sadly for Sherlock, it also pays a pittance. Tony Stark could fly halfway around the world before Holmes could afford to track him down.

Tony Stark’s job as a billionaire inventor buys him a one-way ticket to Round 2. Iron Man scores!
SCORE: IRON MAN – 1
SHERLOCK HOLMES – 0

ROUND 2: ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR
IRON MAN: Sure, money counts, but isn’t love what really matters? Tony Stark has his eye on personal assistant Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Pepper is an intelligent and resourceful woman, but her relationship with Stark is more sweet than spicy.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes’ romantic interest is the insatiable Irene Adler, an American temptress and criminal mastermind who would do anything to help Holmes. It also doesn’t hurt that Canadian actress Rachel McAdams stars in the role!

Irene Adler steals this point for Sherlock.
SCORE: IRON MAN – 1
SHERLOCK HOLMES – 1

ROUND 3: THE SIDEKICK SPAT
IRON MAN: All the great heroes have sidekicks who help them along the way: Batman has Robin, Clark Kent has Chloe Sullivan, and Harry Potter has Ron and Hermione. The closest thing that Tony Stark has to a sidekick is Dr. Yinsen, his fellow hostage who helped to build Iron Man’s first suit of armour. Unfortunately, Yinsen dies before Stark can escape and fulfill his iron-clad calling.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: Dr. John Watson is Sherlock Holmes’ trusty sidekick whose medical training and forensic expertise have been essential to Sherlock’s success. Sherlock and Watson are like peanut butter and chocolate: they’re good on their own, but better together.

A doctor is no good to you dead. Watson wins another point for his pal.
SCORE: IRON MAN – 1
SHERLOCK HOLMES – 2

ROUND 4: THE ARSENAL ARGUMENT
IRON MAN: Iron Man has no shortage of ammo. Not only is his power suit extra durable to withstand blows from missiles, he is also endowed with superhuman strength and can shoot rays to repel enemies. Better yet, he can fly! Beat that, Sherlock!
SHERLOCK HOLMES: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s protagonist can’t fly, but he does have above average strength, thanks to his training in martial arts. But, while he may be able to knock the average man unconscious, the same cannot be said for Iron Man. Instead, Sherlock’s greatest weapons are his wit, close attention to detail, and deductive reasoning.

Wit is useless when might makes right. Stark’s red and gold suit captures another point for Iron Man. The score is tied!
SCORE: IRON MAN – 2
SHERLOCK HOLMES – 2

ROUND 5: TIME OUT
IRON MAN: Times have changed and so should the stories we tell. Director Jon Favreau updated IRON MAN for the 21st century by replacing the superhero’s Cold War origins with current affairs like the war in Afghanistan.  That makes Iron Man the terror-fighting Jack Bauer of superheroes.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: By contrast, SHERLOCK HOLMES is a period piece set back in late 19th century England. This setting makes for a fun night out at the movies, but it lacks relevance to people’s lives. It also means that Holmes has to fight crimes like theft and black magic, which are hardly on the scale of global terrorism.

Sherlock Holmes is stuck in the past, leaving Iron Man to fly to the finish line!
SCORE: IRON MAN – 3
SHERLOCK HOLMES – 2

ROUND UP: Iron Man has started a fire, but the detective from Baker Street can’t take the heat! There is no doubt that Sherlock Holmes will go down in history as one of the world’s best mystery solvers. However, Iron Man has a cooler job and more impressive weaponry, making him a hero for our times that can fight bigger crimes. Case closed.

Iron Man 2 blasts into theatres May 7!
