Oldie but Goodie: iChat With iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove

We dug up this old interview with Miranda Cosgrove, originally published in the May 2008 issue! It's interesting to hear what the iCarly star had to say about the show back when it barely began…

What made you want to become an actress?
When I was 3, I was with my mom and dad and [name not published] asked them if I wanted to do modeling or commercials and stuff. And at first my mom wasn’t really that interested in it, she thought it was kind of weird, and then she ended up deciding to give it a shot. And at first I just did stuff with other little kids. Like, I did a commercial on the beach and stuff like that. And then when I was like 8, I tried out for DRAKE AND JOSH. And it was the first thing I had ever tried out for that I was like, ‘oh, I really want this.’ Because I knew DRAKE AND JOSH from THE AMANDA SHOW, which is like one of my favourite shows, so I was really excited and I actually ended up getting the part. And that’s just kind of how it all started.

And one of your first roles was on SCHOOL OF ROCK. What was it like working with Jack Black?
It was a lot of fun. He’s like the funniest guy you’ll ever meet. And he’s exactly like what you’d expect him to be. He’s just an awesome guy.

How did you feel when you found out that you were cast for the role for iCARLY?
I was really excited. I’ve known Dan for a long time, who created Drake and Josh, and then he made my show so he kind of just told my mom and I all the different ideas he had cause he had a few different ideas for shows and that was automatically the one that really popped out, that I had hoped that he would end up picking the most. And then he did, so I was really excited.

How is working on iCarly different from working on DRAKE AND JOSH?
Well, at first, I was definitely kind of nervous since on DRAKE AND JOSH, I was like the secondary character or something and obviously I wasn’t like the main one. But I think it helps a lot watching them and that kind of prepared me for my show.

Do you still keep in touch with the cast of DRAKE AND JOSH?
Yeah! I was so upset when we finished Drake and Josh because I’m really good friends with all of them and I knew I was going to miss them like crazy but I’m lucky because I’ve gotten to see them a lot and actually Josh is going to direct an episode so that’ll be cool.

On iCarly, what’s your favourite segment from Carly’s web show?
Oh that’s hard. Um…we did this thing called Messing With Lewbert. And we like, play pranks on this bellboy that like works downstairs. It’s a lot of fun.

Do you guys ever prank each other off the set?
Yeah. Jerry is the biggest prankster…the guy who plays my brother. He’s really funny. Even though he’s the oldest, he’s actually the craziest.

The show also features real fan submitted videos. Have there been any memorable submissions so far?
Well that’s really the coolest part, that its interactive, and  kids can really be a part of it. They’re kind of like running the show. Like in the first episode we had a guy come on that could squirt milk out of his eye!  We had a guy that could beat box, so he played the clarinet I think it was or the flute, all sorts of crazy things.

What are your top 5 favourite websites and why?
I just love playing all  games,  like Tetris and Pac Man and stuff. And then I go to Meebo.com sometimes. It’s just like an IMing website, and your friends. And then I actually go on Nick.com and I play the games on there sometimes. And what else? I don’t know. I guess I don’t…well I sign online for school. So I’m always going to that website…

And you also sing the theme song for your show, iCARLY. Is becoming a singer something you’re thinking of pursuing?
Yeah,  I’d love to do that. It was my first time like going into a studio and really singing a song and I just had a really great time. It was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be. So, I’d definitely love to get to make an album or something.

Thank you Miranda Cosgrove and good luck!
