Canadian Radio Music Awards

By Angela McLean

What do you get when you take the Canadian talent we hear every day on the radio and celebrate in a hotel ballroom with awards and performances? You get the Canadian Radio Music Awards. This year’s awards were handed out on March 23rd at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, ON during Canadian Music Week.

The event was fantastic and included performances by Alyssa Reid, Neverest, Dragonette, The Sheepdogs, Kira Isabella, Raghav and Fefe Dobson.

THE MAGAZINE had the chance to speak to several of the attendees, nominees, winners and performers. Read on for what they had to say…

How important do you think it is to have a show like this celebrating the Canadian talent we hear everyday on the radio?

Reid Henry (My Darkest Days): Extremely important, especially to keep bringing Canadian music as far as it can go.

Sal Costa and Reid Henry (My Darkest Days)

Sal Costa (My Darkest Days): We’re definitely an underrated country in terms of what we produce musically. It’s very important.

Mike Klose (Neverest): There’s so much talent. It’s great that we have this in our backyard.

Victoria Duffield: I think it’s amazing to take a week and bring everybody together. I get to meet all these amazingly talented people from Canada and talk to them face-to-face. [We] celebrate each other, our hard work from the past year. I’m happy to be a part of it this year.

Kreesha Turner: I definitely feel that Canadian music doesn’t get enough exposure, so I am a big fan of things like Canadian Music Week. It allows us to hear new up-and-coming Canadian talent and see good performers.

Kreesha Turner

Alyssa Reid: It’s good to bring everybody together – new people who haven’t even started a career yet but are interested in it and people who have been at this for many years – and to learn from each other, meet each other, see what happens and talk to people from labels. I think Canadian Music Week is one of the best things that Canada does for its musicians.

I am sure that one of the biggest pleasures of being an artist is hearing your song on the radio. Do you remember when and where you were when you first heard one of your songs on the radio?

Mike Klose (Neverest): The first time I heard “About Us,” I was at the gym. I was in the middle of an exercise and the song came on the radio and I dropped everything. I couldn’t believe it.

Brendan Colameco & Mike Klose (Neverest)

Brendan Colameco (Neverest): The first time we heard it together, we were in Red Deer, Alberta [during] a radio tour promoting the song. It was crazy. We were all jumping up and down and rocking.

Victoria Duffield: I left a station in Vancouver and they actually told me when they were playing [“Shut Up and Dance”]. It was crazy. I’m still not used to it. It’s very exciting every time I hear it.

Kreesha Turner: I was at a gymnastics club and then my song “Bounce With Me” came on over the PA system. It was a neat first experience.

Alyssa Reid: I first heard “Alone Again” when I was in the car with my parents and they talked over the entire thing. I was like, “I’m on the radio!” and they just wouldn’t stop talking. We were in the driveway thankfully, so I got out, walked in the house, turned on the radio and had a dance party with my dogs.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans and everybody who has been requesting your music on the radio?

Mike Klose (Neverest): A huge, huge, huge thank you. We could not appreciate it more. We have some new music coming soon and hopefully we’ll tour on that and give back to all the fans that have supported us so well.

Victoria Duffield: I would like to say a huge thank you. As a new artist with my first single, to have amazing fans helping me out and supporting me right from the beginning is incredible. Love and lots of appreciation goes out to all of you!

Victoria Duffield

Kreesha Turner: I would be nowhere without my fans so I’m sending all the thanks, love and blessings to them for continued support of my music. Thank you guys, you are the reason that I make music.

Alyssa Reid: Thank you so much. The continued success that people have been helping me gain is all because of their dedication. I understand people can fall in love with a song but it takes a whole lot to fall in love with an artist and when people do that, it’s the best thing ever. For someone to say, “Oh, you know Alyssa Reid?” and they say, “Yeah, I love her,” is extraordinary.
