THE AVENGERS Reaches James Cameron-like Glory

By Dina Ginzburg

THE AVENGERS has earned $600 million in America. Who knew that taking a bunch of superheroes and putting them all into one movie could make that much money? As a general rule, movies that have a bunch of well-known actors tend to flop at the box-office, but THE AVENGERS seems to be the exception.

Six hundred million dollars is nothing to scoff at – only two other movies have managed to earn that much while still in theatres: TITANIC and AVATAR, both directed by James Cameron.

Other Marvel movies have nothing on THE AVENGERS. The money earned from THOR, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER put together is still less than what THE AVENGERS made.

Take a look at the other movies that were able to entice audiences to watch them in theatres:

  1. Avatar
  2. Titanic
  3. The Avengers ($600 million and counting!)
  4. The Dark Knight
  5. Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace
  6. Star Wars
  7. Shrek 2
  8. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
  9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
  10. The Lion King

Interestingly enough, when you look at the top ten Hollywood movies that have made the most at the box-office, the majority are action/thriller movies. It’s quite clear that adventure sells!
